Lyra: “The sentiment probably extends back to my birth.”
But her parents are missing, so she won’t make such jokes. Others have been abducted, too. At first her village leader, the Tactician, thinks these are random attacks from adjacent villages, until a pattern emerges. All victims turn out to be elite villagers call Inclinates. Inclinates are people blessed with abilities to help keep their home safe, and these are the people neighbouring villagers seem to want gone…
This could mean war, one Lyra’s people would have to enter hamstrung.
Further investigations into this pattern reveals that other villages are also under attack, which means something greater, darker, hunts them all, and has already succeeded in eliminating most of their defences. When the Tactician fails to return from the investigation, Lyra is the only remaining Tactical Inclinate left, which means the burden of leadership falls to her.
